Welcome to the Apps for Kids Highlight- March Edition
With the arrival of spring, nature awakens and many animals begin the important task of building habitats to welcome and care for their young. This season’s renewal offers the perfect backdrop for students to explore how living creatures prepare safe spaces for new life.
In this edition, we then decided to highlight engaging resources that connect biology and digital design in the classroom. We encourage you to use these resources to inspire curiosity and technical creativity as your students learn about the natural world and the possibilities of digital fabrication.
Awesome projects!
Check out these cool projects that we selected this month. Congratulations to the inspired designers! See all the shared projects on the Apps for Kids Website.

Bringing Biology to Life: The Animals in Habitats Project

Educators and parents play a critical role in shaping how students perceive the intersection of technology and the natural world. Modern education requires tools that bridge the gap between abstract scientific concepts and tangible application. The “Animals in Habitats” project does exactly this. It combines biological science with introductory computer-aided design (CAD) to foster critical thinking and creativity.
This guide outlines how to use SOLIDWORKS Apps for Kids to teach students about 3D modeling, animal biology and wildlife conservation. By using the platform at www.swappsforkids.com, students do not just learn about animal adaptations; they apply that knowledge to design creatures capable of surviving in specific environments.
Setting the Stage: Adaptation and Survival
Before students open the software, you must establish a strong scientific foundation. The “Consider This” phase of the lesson plan is crucial. It prompts students to think critically about why animals look the way they do and how their physical traits help them survive.
Start a discussion about different environments such as deserts, rainforests or the arctic tundra. Ask students to identify specific challenges animals face in these regions.

Inspiration and Challenges
The Purr-fect Cat Tree
As spring arrives, the natural world becomes a workshop of activity. Animals begin the vital work of building nests, dens, and burrows, creating safe habitats to welcome their young. This instinctive drive to design and construct offers a powerful parallel for our March design challenge.
We invite your students to channel this same creative energy into the digital realm. This month’s challenge is to design and model their purr-fect cat tree. The students can 3D print a miniature version of their cat tree, to play in a dollhouse. It is an opportunity for students to engage in hands-on learning, transforming a digital concept into a tangible object through 3D printing.
This challenge encourages students to think like architects and engineers on a miniature scale, fostering creativity and technical proficiency. We look forward to seeing the innovative habitats your students engineer for their smallest companions.
Here is an example you can get inspired by through a tutorial video.
Do you want to see your students’ or your kids’ designs on SOLIDWORKS Education Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram? Share their A4K creation on social media, mentioning #CatTree AND #swa4k, and we might feature them on our channels!
