Let’s celebrate Ocean Day!

June 8th 20201 is Ocean Day, so let’s celebrate one of our most vital resources! World Oceans Day, originally created in 1992, reminds every one of the major role the oceans have in everyday life. They are the lungs of our Planet and a major source of food and medicine and a critical part of the biosphere. The ocean covers over 70% of the planet and produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen. It is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on ocean.

The purpose of the Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans.

As climate change, pollution and population growth add stresses to the systems it shelters, the race is on to get smart fast about Ocean’s oceans. With 90% of big fish populations depleted, and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished.

Nearly 2 trillion pieces of plastic drift across millions of square kilometers of ocean in all directions, and more pours in every day. Increasingly, researchers are applying 3D modeling and simulation to help accelerate their progress.

A lot of companies and startups are working to find and develop sustainable solutions and products to help preserve the ocean and the ocean. Among them, Dassault Systèmes, through its initiative Water for life,  wants to address the challenge of polluted water, and offers, through Virtual worlds, tremendous accelerators for measuring and optimizing the water footprint of businesses, supporting the growth of sustainability-focused innovation and empowering future generations.

On the other hand, La Fondation Dassault recently launched several projects around water, the last one of them being Mission Ocean, an educational path based on 3D and virtual universes. This project aims at helping middle and high school students to understand the ocean issues by devoting themselves to their academic learning, while preparing their future.

What about you and your kids/students? Do you love the ocean and all the wonderful species that call it home? If yes, we invite you to have your kids/students celebrate this day by illustrating how Ocean Day inspires them with SOLIDWORKS Apps For kids.

In order to help them, here you go a video about how to design an octopus but feel totally free to design what you want of course.

If you are an educator, to participate in the classroom, simply go to the Classroom app page, create your classroom account, set up accounts and have your students get creative straight away.

If you are a parent, simply create your kid’s account by clicking Try Now at the top of this site to get them started.

When their Ocean Day celebration design is finished, share it on social media mentioning #OceanDay and #SWA4K in your posts.
