In the Spotlight

On Sunday, May 8, 2022, our partner BlocksCAD, a web-based 3D modeling tool company, was invited to participate in Boston Children’s Museum’s “Tech Kitchen”. Through this program, the museum hosteds “everyone from entrepreneurs to established tech companies as they prototype, experiment, and test their newest tools and gadgets”. The Boston Children’s Museum Tech Kitchen is a new innovative place to meet inventors, innovators, and high-tech makers as they showcase their latest fun Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEM/STEAM) applications.

The Boston Children’s Museum: the place to be to test new tools

Jonah, BlocksCAD Instructor, and high school STEM educator in Boston, was there to present two sessions on 3D modeling and design with SOLIDWORKS Apps for Kids. The sessions were conducted in a cutting-edge makerspace classroom at the Boston Children’s Museum. Jonah has spent the past five years teaching geometry, algebra, and biochemistry, as well as developing STEM curriculum using the 3D design software BlocksCAD. For the past two years, SOLIDWORKS Apps for Kids and BlocksCAD have established a partnership to bring an introduction to coding and design to children.

Inspiration and Challenges

Water, the source of life, intrigues and fascinates us. Yet, this precious resource is polluted by the way we consume it. June 8 was Ocean Day, so what about having your students involved in this celebration by designing how Ocean inspires them with our SOLIDWORKS Apps for Kids free app?

They can get inspired by the video herafter, showing how to design an octopus:

Do you want to see your kids’ designs on the SOLIDWORKS Education Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram? Share their Apps for Kids creation on social media, mentioning #OceanDay AND #swa4k, and we might feature them on our channels!

What’s New in Apps for Kids

This month you may have noticed a change in the Lesson Plans!

If you haven’t seen or used one of our lesson plans, click on your organization name and then pick Sample Lessons.

Previously we offered 2 types of lesson plan. A standard plan, and an additional design thinking plan. The reality was that these plans were identical, apart from the addition of the design thinking exercise to the latter.

Now, all lesson plans include an optional design thinking exercise and the duplicate lesson plan has been removed.

As well as streamlining the list view of lesson plans, we have also added a teachers notes page to help you navigate and understand what each document contains.

Have fun with these lesson plans, use them as is or as inspiration for your own unique Apps for Kids lessons.
